THE GHOST IN THE MACHINE

Saturnalia would soon be here but I was staying late at the office catching up on photocopying a large Manuscript from one of our correspondents.

It was about 7.00 pm and the office was deserted and silent. I got into a rhythm to speed up the process. I'd done over 100 or so of these and was accidentally in what night be described as a state of 'mental vacuity' of the type recommended by Spare and other Shamans as the key to creating magic.

I picked up a page with a photograph pasted on it. Photographs didn't photocopy very well on these first generation Xerox machines. Sometimes the excess of dark tones could glue the paper to the rollers so you had to adjust the exposure to get it right, but this time I went through the sequence without thinking.

As the photocopy shot out of the machine it was clear something had happened. The image should have been of a scenic view of the Lake District, in fact I could clearly see a puckish face about 2" high staring at me from the page.

This image was overlaid on a bad, almost unrecognisable , first image of Skiddaw. As I looked further at the sheet I could clearly discern two other faces looking directly at me!

Now please be assured that this wasn't the usual form of simulacra dredged up every Xmas by the tabloid press where an overcooked mince-pie or burned bit of toast is said to carry the face of Jesus; if you hold it against the light and squint at it and believe very hard.

The faces on this photocopy weren't like that. These were DEFINITELY faces. I know a face when I see one!

You could turn the sheet upside down or whichever way you liked and they were still recognisable as faces.

The eyes seemed to follow me around the room! In fact they were sort of startled and accusing. I had the distinct impression that I had kind of opened up a psychic door and surprised these three 'imps' who had been 'captured' by the Xerox machine in a million to one situation.

I couldn't believe what I saw so I immediately checked the original photograph to see if there was anything on it which the machine might have 'converted'. There wasn't. I felt the room go cold as I sat down to think this out.

First generation photocopiers worked by blasting a sensitive plate inside the machine with a very high voltage static charge which is polarised into a pattern of the image being copied by the light being directed on to it through a sequence of mirrors from the original on the plate.

The charged image then attracts powdered ink much like a magnet. I figured that either the charge on the drum or the reflected light had been 'compromised' or changed in some way by something other than the proper image.

I remembered reading about a Russian Psychic who had been successful at projecting thoughts through camera lenses onto film which was then developed to reveal the image.

I definitely hadn't created these faces in my mind. (I was thinking about nothing In particular, remember.)

My Xerox 'ghost' was different. The machine ITSELF had created the images, or was used by discarnate beings to create them either intentionally or unintentionally. You can imagine why I froze at the implications.

As I had xeroxed thousands of photocopies and countless millions of other office personnel have no doubt done the same without reporting this phenomenon I concluded that It must have had something to do with the conditions. Vacuous state, continuous photocopying at a precise rythm. change of Image from consistent and regular formatted type-font to a pictorial image, quiet and uninterrupted atmosphere etc.

Maybe. I thought. I should try It again? I reasoned that the puckish faces might have something to do with Skiddau (Nature Elementals that sort of thing) and so I sought an original background Image which was different In both situation and 'texture'.

When you come to look there Isn't much In an office other than typewritten or printed paper so I ended up using a clipboard which had an Imitation crocodile leather finish. After diligently working up my 'vacuous state' by continuing with the manuscript I randomly threw the clipboard on the plate and hit the button.

What came out shocked me rigid. Now you've got to believe me but really I couldn't care less if you do or don't because it happened. There was the unmistakable image of two middle-aged ladles in Victorian dress (high buttoned up collars and lace neck and cuffs) sat around a small circular table covered In a heavy velvet cloth with a patterned border. There were drapes in the background. The really disturbing bit was that they both had their hands placed'flat on this table and they appeared to be looking out... at me!

Anyone who has experienced psychic phenomena before will know what I mean when I say that something snatched at the base of my brain and the hairs stood up on the back of my neck.

The situation had me reeling for a while and I choked off and decided not to use the photocopier again until I had sussed It all out. Later I decided that there could be only two feasible explanations.

(1) Sometime during the Victorian era a couple of spiritists had tried to make contact with the 'other side' and had successfully injected that moment Into the aethyr which had remained in tension until the Xerox earthed it a hundred years or so later.

(2) The Victorian ladles were still at it in some other time-space continuum and the Xerox had picked up their 'message' and they were waiting for a reply!

This appears to be extremely fertile new ground which has LOTS of potential. The Xerox photocopier as a Time Machine takes some thinking about!

I will admit to not having had the opportunity to continue my experiments at the level I would have liked since, because the conditions are difficult to replicate and a hundred photocopies of nothing in particular gets to be an expensive experiment.

Many times have I produced or seen Images which provide sufficient ambiguity to be termed simulacra (i.e. 'Shadowy Likness of one thing appearing unexpectedly in the background of another unconnected object') but I haven't been able to make such definite and incontrovertible contact as with the first two experiences.

At the time I must be honest and say that it scared me; in hindsight I kick myself that I didn't take the opportunity to make further 'contact'.

However to the chagrin of those doubting-thomases who refuse to believe my story I still have the Psychic Photocopy of those two Victorian Ladies tucked away as proof.
